How to Coach the Scissors - Scissors Drill Progression for High Jump

This simple and effective activity progression is ideal for introducing athletes to the Scissors technique in the High Jump.

  • Exercise 1: The Take Off Position

  • Exercise 2: Setting the Run Up

Exercise 1: The Take Off Position

Key Coaching Points

  • Take off should be from a full stretched arm length from the near upright.

  • The planted foot should be angled at ~30 degrees to the centre of the mat.


Exercise 2: Setting the Run Up

Key Points

  • Starting from the line of the mat, walk out 6-10 steps in line with the bar.

  • Turn 90 degrees and walk half the number of steps.

  • e.g. if you walked 6 steps out, walk 3 steps after turning 90 degrees.

  • Mark the final point as the starting position.


Exercise 3: Bar Clearance from a Short Run Up

Key Points

  • Planted foot should be flat (i.e. not on heel or toes).

  • Drive the knee up high on take off.

  • Remain tall on landing.


Exercise 4: Bar Clearance from a Full Approach

Key Points

  • Accelerate into the bar - the final three strides should be the fastest

  • Encourage an active foot plant.
