Athletics Coach Payment Rates
Each coach will set their own fees and charges, according to the experience, equipment, facilities, and services that they offer. To assist coaches, parents, clubs, and athletes make an informed choice, Athletics Australia publishes the Coach Payment Guidelines. These are general recommendations based on the average cost of Track and Field coaching around the country.
In your initial consultation with a new coach, ensure that you understand their fee structure and any other costs that may be associated with training. These may include:
Club fees
Facility fees (including parking)
Squad apparel
Travel fees (e.g. squad camps, National competitions etc.)
Suggested Coaching Payment Rates
The following payment rates are typical athletics coaching fees from around the country as of July 1, 2024. Prices for individual coaches will vary based on their qualifications, experience, services, and other factors.
Private Coaching
Generally includes 1 to 3 one-on-one sessions per week (30-90 minutes), individualised training plans, and ongoing check-ins.
- Annual: $600 - $2400
- Monthly: $150 - $400
- Per Session: $30 - $80
Squad Coaching
Generally includes 1 to 5 group training sessions per week of 45-90 minutes in duration, training plans, and ongoing check-ins.
- Annual: $150 - $1000
- Monthly: $15 - $100
- Per Week: $5 - $25
Online Coaching
May include individualised training programs, video analysis, and ongoing check-ins by email, phone etc.
- Annual: $300 - $2000
- Monthly: $30 - $180
- Campaign*: $100 - $300
*e.g. a 12-week program preparing an athlete for an event.
Athletics Clinics
Includes schools, clubs, or private enterprises who bring in an expert coach to run one-off or short athletics coaching programs.
- Per Session: $50 - $120 per hour
Sporting Schools Payment Rates
Coaches employed by Athletics Australia to deliver Sporting Schools programs on a casual basis are paid according to the payment chart below.
- Level 1 Coaches: $40.00 per hour
- Level 2 Coaches: $50.00 per hour
- Level 3 Coaches and above: $60.00 per hour
Athletics Australia Payment Rates
Coaches employed by Athletics Australia on a casual basis are paid according to the payment chart below.
- Level 1 Coaches: $42.20 per hour
- Level 2 Coaches: $53.10 per hour
- Level 3 Coaches: $63.80 per hour
- Level 4 Coaches: $75.10 per hour
Employed Coaches - Fair Work Obudsman Rates
Employers of Accredited Athletics Coaches may use payment rates determined by the Fair Work Ombudsman depending on their industry.
The Fair Work Obudsman has set payment guidelines for various industries, such as sports coaches working in schools and coaches employed by a National or State Sporting Organisation. Note that lower rates may apply for coaches younger than 21 years of age or trainees.
Educational Services Award
Coaches working in a School may be paid according to the 'Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award' MA000076. The two cateogories most relevant to Track and Field Coaches are Assistant Coach (Level 3.2) and Sports Coach (Level 4.2).

Coaches working in the Fitness industry or at venues which operate in the fitness indutry may be paid according to the Fitness Industry Award (MA000094).
