Here's a target worth having. At the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the Australians who reached 99% of their season best won a medal 57% of the time. Below that line, only 32% did. Reaching this year's form nearly doubled the odds, and it's a target any coach can aim for, at any level or event.
It's a hopeful finding, because it points at something you can plan for: not a lifetime best you can only wait and hope for, but a repeatable, current-form target you build toward. What follows is the full analysis, the size of the gap, how the field spread, how much form actually decided, who beat their best, and where the pattern breaks.

01 · Everyone on one picture

Start with all 90 individual entries on one plot. Each athlete is drawn against their own two benchmarks, so nobody is compared to anyone else, only to themselves.

Every athlete can be judged two ways: against their best this year, or against their all-time best. Tap between them and watch the medallists separate from the field, then blur back into it.

Same athletes, same day, now scored against their all-time mark. The teal and orange fall on both sides of the line, and the split nearly closes, 53% against 40%. A career best is an old ceiling many never revisit in a year, so it reads readiness far less clearly.
03 · The gap, in numbers
How big was the difference
Averaged across the team, medallists sat at 99.1% of their season best on the day; the rest of the field sat at 97.8%. A 1.3-point gap sounds small, but at this level a point of form is a lot, and it holds in every discipline. Judged on career best instead, the two groups sit at 97.2% and 95.7%: a wider gap, but a noisier one, because a lifetime best is a further-off mark for almost everyone.

Medallists sat higher than the field in every event. The "medal zone" is the span of form medals were won from, and it tells its own story: tight in the sprints, wide open in throws, which is the next thing worth a look.
04 · Why season best is the gate
Current form is the doorway to a PB
Put both benchmarks on one plot and a striking thing appears: one whole corner is empty.
Career best runs along the bottom, season best up the side. The bottom-right box, high on career best but low on season best, has nobody in it. No athlete reached a near-PB performance without first being in current form, so a personal best sits inside season-best form, never outside it. Aiming an athlete at reproducing this year's best keeps a PB on the table; the door to it is current form.
05 · How the field spread
Readiness wasn't evenly spread
Of the 62 athletes with a verified season best, most arrived close to their year's form, and a good number went beyond it. The medal line at 99% sits right where the field starts to thin, which is part of why it separates so cleanly.

Bars show the share of the 62 athletes in each band of readiness. Nearly half reproduced at least 99% of their season best, and 18 went past it entirely. Only about one in seven was more than five points down on their year. Because so much of the field clustered near current form, the athletes who fell short stood out, and mostly missed.

In the sprints, form was close to decisive. Not one sprinter below 99% of season best won a medal. When races are settled by hundredths, a fraction off current pace is the gap between the podium and a heat exit.

In endurance, form still helped but tactics helped more. Rounds, positioning and a well-timed kick meant athletes a touch short of peak could still medal.

Jumps had the flattest split. Form separated jumpers least, so one big attempt on the day counted for a lot and an athlete slightly below their best still had a real shot.

07 · How decisive was form
Measuring the link, event by event
One way to ask how much form mattered is to measure how tightly it moved with medals. A correlation of zero means no link at all; the closer to one, the more form and medals rose together. Run it by discipline and the picture from the charts turns into numbers.

Form was most decisive in the sprints, and on a small sample in throws, and loosest in endurance and jumps, exactly where rounds and tactics do more of the work. Pooled across everyone the link is real but modest, about +0.22, which is the honest size of the effect: enough to plan around, not enough to bank on.
08 · The upside
Who beat their best
The target is a floor, not a ceiling, and plenty cleared it. Eighteen of the 62 athletes went past their season best on the day; twelve of them medalled, and six set a new personal best. Jemima Montag walked to gold at 103% of her season best, Jessica Hull ran 103% in the 5000m for silver, and Mackenzie Little threw javelin gold at 103% of her season best while sitting at just 93% of her all-time mark. A well-timed peak doesn't only protect form, it can raise it when it counts.
Why this matters for the message. Aiming to reproduce this year's best is the reliable target. Exceeding it is the upside a good peak buys you, so the 99% line lifts an athlete without ever capping them.
09 · The other side
When form wasn't enough, and when it wasn't needed
The line is a guide, not a gate, and it cuts both ways. Eleven of the 27 medallists were below 99% of their season best, every one of them in endurance, jumps or throws and none in the sprints, medalling on position, execution and field depth rather than raw form. Matthew Denny is the clearest case: discus gold at 91.5% of his season best and 90.6% of his career best, won on the day against the field in front of him. Going the other way, several athletes turned up in excellent form and still missed the podium, because a strong day isn't the same as a strong day relative to the field you are in. Both are why 99% lifts the odds without promising the result.
10 · The endurance wrinkle
The peak came before the final
All six of the open 800m and mile medallists ran their quickest Games time in a heat or a semi, then won a final that was 0.5 to 3.3% slower. The final wasn't about the clock, it was about position, recovery and racing smart. A championship asks for the performance again across a week of rounds, so periodise to reproduce form more than once rather than to fire a single perfect shot.

One target, three jobs
The same 99% target reads a little differently depending on where you sit. Tap your role.

Aim to reproduce your best on the day, through the rounds. The target is at least 99% of your season best, and a good peak can push past it. Measure yourself against this year's form, not a mark you set years ago.
Time the plan so their best is available through heats, travel and pressure. Track proximity to season best as your readiness gauge, and protect it hardest in the events where form decides most.
Read readiness as a range the athlete can reproduce, not a single peak. Score it against current form rather than an old personal best, and expect a tight window in the sprints, a wider one in tactical events.

Six things to hold onto
Form beat the PB
Medallists produced 99.1% of their season best on the day; the field 97.8%. Nearness to this year's form separated them, not nearness to a lifetime best.

A pattern, not a rule
Pooled, the link is real but modest, about +0.22, from one team seen after the fact, and conditions swing results. It lifts the odds, it doesn't promise them.

Hold all of this loosely at its edges. The tie between form and medals is real but loose, pooled at about +0.22, and this is one selected team viewed after a single Games. Plenty of athletes arrived in great shape and still missed. Conditions matter too, and heavily in this sport: wind, heat and weather swing throws, jumps and sprint times no matter how well an athlete is periodised. So treat 99% of season best as a target that lifts the odds and gives an athlete their best chance, not a promise of a result.
