Reflecting after the Australian Athletics Championships
Reflection using the Good, Better, How Framework.
The Australian Athletics Championships have wrapped up—full of breakthroughs, learning moments, and a few curveballs (as always). As the stadium quiets and the spikes are packed away, it’s time to do what great coaches do: reflect.
A simple but effective framework that is used by many of our elite athletes when reflecting after a major championshps, is Good, Better, How.
Good – What did I do well?
Think beyond results. What did you bring to the table that helped your athletes stay composed, feel supported, or perform close to their best?
Did your pre-race planning hit the mark? Was your energy right on comp day?
Recognise your wins—they matter.
Better – What could I improve?
This isn’t about self-criticism. It’s about growth.
Were there moments that felt rushed or uncertain? Could communication with athletes, support staff, or parents have been smoother?
Could post-race recovery or athlete handovers be tightened up?
Get specific. The clearer the observation, the easier it is to improve.
How – How can I improve for next time?
Here’s where it turns into action.
Maybe you create a comp-day checklist. Or chat with a trusted peer about your warm-up process. Maybe it's refining your athlete briefings or structuring your own downtime during long championship days.
The most effective coaches aren’t perfect—they’re constantly refining the process.
Make it a Habit
Five minutes with this reflection framework after each major meet is enough to build long-term growth. Better yet—share it with a fellow coach or mentor. Reflection becomes even more powerful when it’s part of a conversation.
We grow when we reflect. We grow more when we reflect together.
