Use championship results to set realistic event goals for your athlete. Compare the entry standard, the time athletes ran to reach the final, and the performances that won medals.

Start with the seven edition average to avoid anchoring the conversation to one exceptional winner. Then select an individual year and check the wind, field size and final results. Lower times are faster.

How the benchmark changed

The chart always shows 2019 to 2026, with a visible gap for the cancelled 2020 championships. Lines do not bridge that gap. Dashed segments touch a wind assisted final or qualification mark; the race is still a valid championship result. The final wind filter changes final measures only, not preceding round qualification marks. No wind correction is applied. Missing top eight values mean fewer than eight valid finishes, not zero performance.

02 · See the whole pathway
Compare categories without inventing a development curve.
Keep the same sex category and period, then look across the age groups. The points describe different championship fields, not the same athletes growing older. A younger category can have a faster winner than an older one. That is a feature of the results, not a mistake to smooth away.
All age groups
The entry column always refers to the 2026 published standard. It is not a historical average and is not used to judge entry eligibility in any earlier edition. Source links sit beside each age group.
What the seven edition picture says
Across all recorded winds, the men’s average winning time moved from 11.74 at U14 to 10.09 at Open. The average final cutoffs were 12.55 and 10.45, respectively. That describes the difference between these fields, not the improvement required of every individual.[3–8, 12–14]
Not every age step is a faster race
For women, the seven edition average winning times at U16, U17 and U18 were approximately 11.86, 11.78 and 11.75. The corresponding final roster benchmarks were 12.52, 12.42 and 12.55. Different entrants, winds and race formats make a perfectly smooth ladder unrealistic.[3–8, 12–14]
03 · Put a time beside the evidence
Where does your athlete’s performance sit?
Compare a fully automatically timed competition performance with the selected category above. This is a comparison of recorded times, not a prediction of a place or a selection decision. Discuss the athlete’s normal performance range as well as their best race.
Choose an athlete category
Select the gender and age group, then enter a properly timed 100 m performance.
The result will show the gap to each benchmark, without labelling the athlete.
Why hand timing and training gates are not mixed into this comparison
The source results are championship race performances, not a set of training tests. For this resource, hand timed efforts and timing gate tests are kept separate rather than automatically converted into championship equivalents. Record the start procedure, timing method, distance and conditions alongside the number before comparing sessions or races.
This is a measurement rule for the tool, not a claim that a training test lacks coaching value.
Look inside one final
The full field often tells a different story from one headline time.
Each dot is one valid finish, including guests. This race inspection always shows the actual final, even when the summary wind filter excludes it. “Zoom” changes the plotted range only. All times remain listed and all valid finishes remain in the full mean.
04 · Entry is a separate question
The 2026 entry standards, clearly separated.
These are the published 2025/26 championship entry standards, updated 28 October 2025. They are a 2026 reference, not a promise about the next edition. For 100 m, the qualifying period began on 1 January 2025. The first three athletes at their own State or Territory Championships could also enter without the numerical standard.[9]

For the next championship, check its published standards and your State or Territory entry process. Meeting a time alone does not confirm all eligibility requirements.[10]
The wind rule depends on the question.
A following wind above +2.0 m/s exceeds the record wind limit. However, the 2026 entry document allowed up to +4.0 m/s for under age events and +3.0 m/s for Open events. A wind assisted performance is therefore not automatically unusable for championship entry.[9][11]
This checks the wind criterion only. It does not validate a record, a qualifying performance or an entry. Legal winds are not identical winds: a headwind race is not normalised to still air here.
05 · Four useful coaching lessons
The exceptions make this a better coaching tool.
A clean chart should not hide inconvenient results. These examples show why the headline number needs a short conversation beside it.
Hundredths can hide the decision.
Mason McGroder’s 10.94 was recorded as .931; Waldo Pretorius’s 10.94 was .940. One appears in the final and the other does not. A display rounded to hundredths cannot reproduce the entire qualification decision.[race]
Coach conversation: aim for repeatable execution, not a supposed guarantee at exactly the last reported hundredth.
The mean and median tell different stories.
A valid 33.99 finish remains in the results. Including it gives a full final mean of 13.05, while the median is 10.72 and the leading eight mean is 10.69. Removing it without explanation would make the average tidier, but the analysis less transparent.[race]
Coach conversation: use the median to understand the centre of this field, then inspect the full result. The result alone does not establish why a finish was slow.
A faster year is not a controlled experiment.
The 2024 winning time was 11.00 into a 3.7 m/s headwind. In 2025 it was 10.40 with a 2.8 m/s following wind. Different winners and different conditions make that 0.60 second gap unsuitable as a direct estimate of development.[2024][2025]
Coach conversation: compare several races and their conditions before describing a category as dramatically stronger or weaker.
Race winner and national champion can differ.
Singapore’s Veronica Shanti Pereira won the race in 11.37. Torrie Lewis was the Australian champion in 11.38. This resource uses 11.38 for the national winning benchmark but keeps the guest’s performance in the final distribution.[race]
Coach conversation: establish whether you are discussing the Australian title, the whole race or an athlete’s national position.
A U18 athlete runs 11.10. What can you conclude?
Using only the seven edition benchmark, which response is the most defensible?
Turn the number into an individual coaching conversation.
For a developing sprinter, treat the selected benchmark as background information. Agree on a competition aim, then choose a small number of actions the athlete can influence. For example: a consistent start routine, a technically clear acceleration cue and a plan for recovering between rounds. Those are suggested coaching actions, not training interventions tested by this dataset.
A useful review might ask: “Your best race is close to this field. How often are you reproducing it, under what conditions, and what helps you race well?” A less useful review turns the average into a deadline: “You must run this by your next birthday.” Nothing in these seven championship fields supports that deadline.
06 · Check the evidence
Every year, every category, with the awkward details left in.
Use the audit to inspect individual races and source notes. “Final roster” and “Q/q maximum” are kept separate wherever the source flags and final list differ. We do not infer the reason for a discrepancy from the result sheet alone.

What exactly has been calculated?
The Australian champion’s final time. In the 2022 and 2023 Open women’s races, this differs from the guest race winner’s time. Winning comparisons are not a list of the fastest Australian performances that season.
Add the eight leading valid final times and divide by eight. Guests are included. A year with fewer than eight valid finishes has no top eight mean and is omitted from that measure’s period average.
The mean includes every valid championship final finish, including unusually slow times. The median is the middle value, or the mean of the two middle values. DNS, DQ and DNF have no valid time and are excluded.
Match listed finalists to the immediately preceding round, then take the slowest valid time. Listed DNS or DQ finalists with a valid preceding mark remain part of the roster. Invalid preceding marks do not become numerical values.
Calculate each annual measure first, then average the included years with equal weight. “Average final median” means the mean of the annual medians, not a pooled median. Missing values are never zero filled. The cancelled 2020 edition is not counted in any mean.
The optional filter excludes final measures above +2.0 m/s or with missing final wind. It does not remove or replace preceding round qualification marks. Each qualification benchmark retains its own wind reading or readings.
The dataset covers finals and reconstructed qualification benchmarks, not a complete, deduplicated average of every athlete in every championship round. Supplementary finals and Para championship divisions are outside this analysis.
Calculations use published times to hundredths. Extra thousandths are preserved in selected explanatory notes, not substituted into the averages. These are descriptive comparisons, without adjustment for wind, weather, attendance or changes in race format.
Age categories need their own checks. Athletes can appear in more than one age category under the relevant championship rules. The figures are not seven independent samples of unique athletes. Do not read the age comparison as a tracked growth curve, a maturation assessment or a prescribed timetable for progression.[10]
What this article does not establish
It does not show the chance that a particular time will make next year’s final, the proportion of all Australian athletes at a given standard, or an athlete’s likely senior ceiling. Seven title races per group remain a limited observation window. There are no 2020 results because that edition was cancelled. A change can reflect who entered, who progressed, wind, competition structure or an unusual final, and this dataset cannot isolate those explanations.
The administrative standard is only verified here for the 2026 edition. Earlier entry standards have not been backfilled, and later standards should be checked against the new championship documents.
For coaching purposes, use the winner to understand the sharp end, the top eight mean or median to understand the final field, and the qualification record to understand that year’s route into the final. Use none of them as a label for the person.

The 2019 results come from Athletics Australia’s 2019 Handbook of Records and Results, hosted by Possumbility; 2021 and 2022 use the full Australian Athletics championship result books. Possumbility is also used directly for the 2025 U18, U20 and Open races and selected historical cross checks.
